<image:title>Writer - Poetry, April, and Me - Who do we think is a Poet?</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always loved poetry but didn’t write. I hadn’t read much poetry since my school days when from 8-10th grade we read and studied so many poems in English and Hindi and also an entire play by Shakespeare. I started enjoying poetry again when I was reading to my children. My favorite children’s book about poetry is A River of Words by Jen Bryant illustrated by Melissa Sweet. When I read it and saw the illustrations, I knew I feel those same things, so maybe I too was a poet? I wanted to share what I saw and felt as a poet but I still didn’t write. Then one day I bought a poetry book for adults, Ballistics by Billy Collins. When I read it on a flight from Chicago to New Orleans, I immediately started to write. For the 2020 NaPoMo, another of my poems was shared by Katherine Young, Arlington’s first poet laureate. Monday Morning & Chai was one of two poems by me to be included in her anthology of poetry called Written in Arlington, an Arlington Arts grant project by Katherine. I think it started when I offered to design the cover of the book. As I worked on the cover I thought about which poems to send Katherine I also thought about who else could send in their poems. What about people who didn’t live in Arlington but wrote their poems at the Studio? Or wrote their poems to be in a Studio show? What about all the poets who had participated in the 2017 Studio project Thou Art: The Beauty of Identity? With an okay from the editor I started to remember whose names I should suggest. In the end there was Rana Jaafar Yaseen, an award-winning poet from Iraq with 7 books of poetry in Arabic. She would share a poem in English. Hanan Seid, an Arlington slam poet and the Studio’s first artist-in-residence. Sughra Hussainy, who wrote her first English poem at the Studio. And Kori Johnson, a seasoned poet who had 3 poems in the 2018 studio show at UUCA, Baked Clay/Endless Sky: Five Years of PAUSE. It is just so magical for me to see all these writers, and others whose work I love, all in the same book. Photo: Sushmita with a copy of Written in Arlington</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer - Poetry, April, and Me - Educated by the Past and Connected to the Present As I was writing this post, I got an email from an old friend, Anjum Altaf. He was replying to the newsletter I had sent out about my new website. He wrote: “Dear Sushmita, Congratulations on adapting creatively to this very difficult period. I look forward to going through the new website. I am pleased to inform you that my book of poems, Transgressions: Poems Inspired by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, is now available on Kindle for $4.99. You might recall I read a couple of them at the Studio well before they were published. The Studio was the only place where I had the opportunity to read them in public. Please pass on the information to the group that is interested in poetry.”</image:title>
<image:caption>I felt a warmth in my heart that those poems had been shared here, at Studio Pause, before we were all isolated away. I learned from reading his book that Faiz Ahmad Faiz is considered among the most popular modern poets of Urdu, the national language of Pakistan which is also spoken in India. The poems in this collection are inspired by his poetry. "Each poem in the collection provides an intertextual engagement with, and adaptation of, a specific Faiz poem. Altaf supplements each with a brief note, giving the context in which it spoke to him personally and led him to capture its essence in his own verse,” says a review by Muneeza Shamsie, the leading authority on literature in English from Pakistan, in Dawn on Feb 2, 2020. Yet, in his opening essay By Way of Explanation, he shares how poetry of resistance must be updated to stay current with the times, and laments the lack of present day poets writing in Urdu. “The absence of equally powerful poetry after Faiz underscores a problem peculiar to Urdu—that it is past its peak as a medium for the expression of lasting literary feelings.” He goes on to say, “But unlike, say, the Russian aristocracy that switched from French to the language of the people for good, the North Indian aristocracy abandoned the native language for English within a few generations.” He worries that as writers of such poetry don’t write in English either, this style of poetry will be lost. The essay is beautiful and absolutely heart-breaking. I learned a lot when I read the review of Transgressions that appeared in The Friday Times on Feb 7, 2020. It is by Dr. Amjad Hussain, professor emeritus of humanities, University of Toledo in Ohio. As I read more about how he was writing in response to the terrible incidents happening in universities in India in 2016, when authorities and students clash, I remembered that Anjum was an academic himself, having served as the Dean of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. However, I had met him as a friend of a friend’s friend when he worked at the World Bank in Washington DC and had invited him to the Studio. It was interesting to me how as an administrator, his love for poetry let him relate to the students’ problems in a totally different way. <image:caption>Give artists a chance to succeed. Teach them the business of being fulfilled. Show them careers and new ways to live, Power their spirit, Give them belief. It’s hard when you’re new and no one knows you. Things can feel different, but ART can help you. Find ways to tell the story. You are EXCEPTIONAL! Don’t say you’re an artist, only occasional. Good people, come touch these creations. Their work is amazing, it exceeds expectations. Look at their talent, feel what’s inside. Stop judging the artists, it’s all in your mind. Open new doors, show possibilities. Forget being perfect, share responsibilities. Art is their job, their dream is the canvas. No matter where they come from Liberia or Kansas. We’re here to EMPOWER and give all a voice. We bring the world together it’s all about choice. Believe in yourself, that’s all we can do. The sky is the limit for ME and for YOU.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer - From One to Many - It is fun telling the story of this artwork. It was first shown at my solo show, Let’s Tell Our Tales! - Everyday Stories as Artist’s Books and Collages by Sushmita Mazumdar, at the Popcorn Gallery, Glen Echo Park, Maryland. The year was 2012. Later it was shown in two other exhibits in Virginia and Maryland. The story of this artwork however, started on the Metro some years ago, as I took the Blue Line to the Freer and Sackler Gallery of Art, as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art was called back then. My commute to docent training on Wednesdays usually included reading or sketching. This time, sketching quickly turned to writing as what the cool Wall Street-type guy in the pinstriped suit was saying on his cellphone caught my attention.</image:title>

<image:title>Artist - Before The Studio - Monsoon Windows Mixed media on paper, 2012. In the collection of Ketan Dholakia and Shalini Razdan. My first artwork to be framed for a show, Monsoon Windows was created in 2012 and accepted into a show at The Art League, in Alexandria VA. In this photo I stand with my dear friend and mentor, artist Kathleen James Avila who came to see it. This was also the first artwork in which I found Devanagari script appear in the form of my favorite song lyrics from Hindi movies! The song is Barso Re Megha Megha, from the movie Guru. <image:title>Artist - Before The Studio - Lost & Found mixed media on paper, 2012. In a private collection. I painted this artwork inspired by the powerful ink brushstrokes of Japanese paintings I have studied and given tours of in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, where I have been a docent since the year 2000. I also tried out an old Japanese technique of embossing from the back certain parts of the painting where there was metallic paint, the raised surface glimmering as they caught the light. My teacher, Marsha Semmel, and the class seemed to like it. That day after class I took it to the studio. There I printed out my poem Lost & Found on my colorful collection of Korean Hanji paper and collaged it on to look like a city skyline. When I took it back the class was surprised! I shared a studio space at Convergence, Alexandria, in those days and studio mate Rusty told me I must join Arlington Artists Alliance, where he was a member. So in Jan 2013 I joined and entered this artwork, fresh from my solo show, in their show Walk the Line. Soon I heard that it won the Best in Show award! In March that year it hung at Cassat’s in Arlington (photo, left) and then it was sold! When the show came down my husband and I wrapped it up and drove it to an address in Falls Church. I have never seen it since. BUY the print. Print Size: 16 x 20 (matted 20 x 24 in) : $ 140.00</image:title>

<image:title>Artist - Song & Dance: A Collaboration between Nostalgia and the Pandemic, 2020 - Tere Naam se Shuru/Starts with Your Name Water-soluble graphite and gold acrylic paint on handmade paper from Samarkand, UZ. This artwork celebrates an old song which wishes for a love that has a long life, starting with a name and ending at the same name. I decided to use the handmade paper from Samarkand which I brought back from my trip in 2018 because Shakil had asked me to bring him a traditional Uzbek cap from the trip and when he came to pick that up I had shown him the paper as well. And of course, he had loved it. The story of the paper is amazing too. It was made at the same place where it had all started a thousand years ago! It was perfect for this song, I realize now. <image:title>Artist - Song & Dance: A Collaboration between Nostalgia and the Pandemic, 2020 - Tum to thehre Pardesi/You are after all a Foreigner Water-soluble graphite and gold acrylic paint on handmade paper from Mumbai, India. “Okay we worked with the greats, and today I am thinking of a local guy,” Shakil wrote. He shared the song of a one-hit-wonder from his neighborhood. I looked for the video to watch/listen to it so I could draw the lyrics (what a funny phrase!) but I found so many versions I couldn’t tell the actual one. Shakil sent me the original but wow, it was something to see how many people had recorded their own versions of this song, which is the accusation of a man who knows the foreigner cannot be trusted to stay. Turns out this paper, also from Chimanlal’s in Bombay, is Shakil’s favorite color! <image:title>Artist - StoryPrints - Patthar ki Tarah/Like Stone Water-soluble graphite, red food color, and gold acrylic paint on paper This artwork mixes the lament of the singer who accuses the big city for turning a man’s heart into lifeless stone with the celebration of gold-like Urdu poetry. I made the red circles with a pebble and food coloring and then made the expressive calligraphy in graphite which also comes from the earth. The story of the paper is amazing too. I first started on a deeper red paper, bought from the big city where I went to art school. It’s the big city in the song too and the shop where I bought this paper, Chimanlal’s, is right there where the taxi is in the film when this song happens. But I messed that one up and the red was too deep for the red circles I added. So I pulled out another sheet… turned it over to the orange-red side, and wrote there! <image:title>Artist - StoryPrints - Tum to thehre Pardesi/You are after all a Foreigner Water-soluble graphite and gold acrylic paint on handmade paper from Mumbai, India. <image:title>Artist - Bazaar, 2012</image:title>
<image:caption>For this year's National Poetry Month, I am so honored to share my poem, Bazaar, as part of Virginia poet laureate Luisa A. Igloria’s Poem-A-Day Virginia project. To be there with so many great and notable poets is something because so many people work in the creative fields, but we never hear about it. I know this well from my work at the Studio. To intentionally bring diverse voices out into the open is important work as we learn many new things about people's lives, their thoughts, and even dreams. Some responses I got from sharing this on social media: CM: That's great Sush! Congrats! Sush: Thanks! This poem was critiqued at Arlington Writer’s Group and the artist’s book was in my 2012 solo show. Maybe you and MK remember it. MK: I totally remember it! And I still like it! ….. SDR [from Mumbai, India]: So good, Sush! Sent a shiver down my spine to think this could actually have been experienced by you - not getting the beads you wanted + missing your flight. (I also admit it’s going to be my nightmare now, figuring out where you were in the first place that taking a left would have taken you to Linking Road ) Sush: I love this comment, fellow Bambaiya! When you are going round and round you could land up anywhere! Especially in dreams But seriously, it’s a very real thing waking up in the middle of the night trying to remember the name of the street back home where your atm was. And finding there is no one to ask and your husband can’t help because he is from here SDR: I could feel that from the words of your poem !! But that’s probably why the God has kept K [her brother] close by. Aadhi raat ko bhi phone karke street ka naam poochne ka KD: [her brother] SD: If she is looking for a bazaar on Linking Road, she is making a left turn from Khar Telephone Exchange at the crossroads with Satguru’s. If there is no bazaar it means the mooncipalty truck was there a few minutes ago and all those bazaru guys have fled. Sush: You are welcome SDR: That’s exactly what I was thinking, Khar Telephone Exchange Lane. The municipality truck bit was hilarious, don’t know how I didn’t think of it esp when we have that tamasha just under my building every Tuesday !! Sush: KD arrey baba I go down my street and turn left to come to Linking Road at Standard Chartered bank (ANZ). Then I turn right and go all the way to Bandra. Barobar na? …. TLJ: I love it, Sush! Your words brought me right to that search for the bazaar. GP: Superb!! Congrats! I felt like I was living this dream. Hope to reconnect once I am back. In India until April 20. Take care MG: I love your poem, mostly because I can see and feel and be in your dream with you, so different from the experience of a dream narrative telling - which is maybe what you are referring to when you write 'When I make it into art and share, people connect.'</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist - Bazaar, 2012 - What she created in this poetry video is a startling glimpse into my dreams, like she saw what I saw! It was crazy, actually. Like she knew which of my 1000s of photos of that home were the exact ones to include and mix with photos of my jewelry I had bunched up and stuffed in boxes at home here. Even editing the audio of the autowalla and me--how did she know this was the perfect spot? How can it be?</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course it can be! What did I think LouLou is capable of as an amazingly creative soul who knows me well? She is capable of making a dream come true, of this. What a thing this is, to show me how we can share it with so many others so they can connect with it in some way. Even copies of my book can’t do that.</image:caption>

I added the treasure box. That's where I would store stories.</image:caption>
