Mangli, the Very Special Goat, 2011

I took this really funny story from my mother’s childhood, transformed it to become a storybook, and made it by hand. Since Mangli, the Very Special Goat, was special, I had to make this book special too.

I learned to make this book at a workshop decades ago

I love how it is still such a surprise!

Color it in: The pictures I drew in this book are inspired by henna designs we decorate our hands with in India. The pictures in the book are in black outline so you (and I ) can color them using color pencils.

Hang up the kurta: The kurta, is a typical Indian shirt like my father wears. I have included one for you to hang up on the clothesline in this 3-D storybook’s courtyard.

Figure it out: This book is made from one sheet of paper. Can you figure it out and make one on your own?

Photo: A student at Key School, Annapolis, is surprised when I open up the one-page storybook.

Learn about how this little book inspired my signature project, City of Stories. Plus, Me, Here & Elsewhere (2024), and Me, Here, & Green Valley (2025)
